After creating your blog with WordPress, the links of your future articles (called permalinks) will be something like http://your-domain.com/?p=123. With a simple adjustment, you can change them to http://your-domain.com/article-title/.
Why to change the permalinks?
Basically, there are two advantages of the “pretty” permalinks:
- They are more user friendly. Imagine that I send you in a chat the following link: http://some-blog.com/?=123. And then I will send you this one: http://some-blog.com/how-to-make-money-with-a-blog/. In the first case, you will not have the slightest idea what it is. But in the second, you will know that the article talks about how to make money with a blog.
- You will improve the SEO. The keywords will appear in the URLs of your posts. Search engines appreciate that. So you can easily and quickly help your articles rank better, which will result in more traffic to your blog and, logically, more money in your pocket.
How to change the structure of your permalinks
You can do it from the control panel of your blog. Follow these steps:
1. Log in to the control panel
You will find the control panel of your blog in the wp-admin folder. That is, type into your browser’s address bar http://your-domain.com/wp-admin and log in.
2. Locate the settings section
In the left part of the control panel of your WordPress, click on the Settings option and then Permalinks.
3. Change the permalinks
On the permalinks settings page you will see several options. From my experience, most bloggers use the Post name option.
